If you are planning to settle in Canada permanently, you have to undergo the process of obtaining a permanent residency document (PR). You may want to first visit Canada as a tourist or under one of the IEC programs, in order to find out whether your expectations about living in Canada correspond to reality. There are several ways of obtaining permanent residency:
- Express Entry pathway
The program requires meeting several criteria such as: age, education, professional experience, English and/or French language proficiency, an adequate amount of money, a clean criminal record.
- Provincial Nominee Programs – vary among provinces (i.e. immigration fair)
- Family sponsorship by the immediate family (spouses, common law partners, children)
- Sponsorship by children or grandchildren living in Canada
